The Comparison Trap

This is Part 3 of our series on Loving Yourself.

If you missed the last 2 topics I encourage you to go check those out first! I trust that you will be blessed by them.

Today the Lord has guided me to focus on the struggle with comparing ourselves to others. And I assure you, I am speaking to myself in this post as well.

No one is perfect. And no one can truly say that they do not put some weight on the opinions of others. It could be words from your Mother, Father, Close friend, Business partner, Teacher, even Pastor.

We value their opinion.

But what happens when seeking other people’s opinion about YOU has more weight than your opinion of your own self? And what if their words mean more to you than everything that God has been telling you and showing you?

That my friend is the beginning of the Comparison Trap.

I struggled with this for years till it literally crippled my confidence in myself. If someone whose opinion I valued criticized me for anything – it hurt me soooo very deeply!

It got so bad that I grew to the point where I believed that I could do NOTHING right.

  • I compared myself to those who were always being encouraged in the ministry and I felt lower than them.
  • I compared myself to beautiful women and felt as if I was not pretty enough.
  • I compared myself to women I saw on the street with their boyfriends or husbands and felt that I was not good enough to get one of those (because I was STILL single and in my thirties!).
  • I compared myself to my coworkers and felt that they always did a better job than I did.

And internally (secretly) I began to hate them ALL.

Worst of all…….I hated MYSELF.

And ultimately that is what Comparison causes. It steals our joy and it fills our hearts with hate and discontentment.

Nothing is ever good enough because it does not match up to what the other person has. 😫

But most of all:

It starves us of LOVE.

💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

And love is the key to fixing all of our comparison issues! 😊

Because if I truly love myself – their opinion of me will not matter (and it definitely won’t offend me). It will just roll off my back!

And if we truly loved ourselves, we wouldn’t even notice the lady on the street is prettier. We would just be like “Girl I love your shoes! It looks haute!”

Isn’t that amazing?! Loving ourselves gives us the confidence to encourage others instead of trying to bring them down! 🤯

Truly loving ourselves also leads us to encourage ourself to Do Better. So instead of beating yourself up for making a mistake, you will encourage yourself to try harder next time. You will begin to believe and declare that “I can do this!” 💪

And the list goes on and on………😁

There is no end to the issues that Loving Yourself will heal.

So TODAY look at yourself in the mirror and say “I LOVE me no matter what! I love my flaws and I love my strengths. I am a beloved daughter of the King above all kings and He didn’t make a mistake! I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me!!!”

Go on……..pour out love and encouragement on yourself.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
