Tidings of Comfort and Joy

Today has been such a beautiful, restful Christmas for me. My husband and I slept most of the day! I don’t know about you but this month has been hectic for us so honestly today our bodies just crashed lol. We couldn’t help it.

This morning though, I sat and watched an animation film called ‘The Star’. It was a really nice story about a donkey who had these big dreams of being something important but his dreams just didn’t seem to be working out. It seemed as if only troubles were following him. Yet in the end, he came to realize that all of these ‘troubles’ led him to his purpose – carrying Mary the mother of Jesus. He got to be part of the Christmas Story! So in the end he got to be part of something really important.

Now, I will have to admit that if you are looking for a true depiction of the Christmas story that followed the Bible to the letter – this is NOT the movie for you. But despite the creative liberties taken (lol!) the movie opened my eyes to something. There was a scene where Joseph was clearly frustrated and couldn’t understand, if they were to be parents to the Son of God, why was everything so hard?! And Mary had to admit that it was indeed difficult but that perhaps it was all part of God’s plan.

Just imagine this for a second. His wife is pregnant and desperately needs a room to stay in to have a baby, yet everywhere they went there was no space! That would indeed have been difficult and frustrating. All that could be found was a stable. A STABLE!!!!!

Wow. I had never truly considered Mary and Joseph to be ordinary people like you and me. People with emotions. I don’t know how but I always pictured the story exactly how I read it. One thing led to another and poof baby Jesus was born! It sounds so funny now that I am writing it out lol. But the truth is that they were humans! They must have wondered what God was doing at certain points. What is especially amazing to me is that, although they were carrying such precious cargo, they experienced difficulties.

Just like we do today.

The Christmas story is so very beautiful and powerful and amazing! A star, magi, angels appearing to shepherds…….I mean you can’t make this kind of stuff up! It’s incredible. And although Mary and Joseph may not have understood everything that was happening, everything happened the way that God had planned for it to happen. Jesus Christ came to the earth!!! To save mankind from their sins. To redeem us and set us free from every bondage.

And likewise, we don’t know our full story – only God does. But He is such an amazing storyteller. Despite all that you may have experienced this year, believe me when I say that they are all working in you so that you can grow to be more like Christ. It may have been difficult and frustrating for some but keep on trusting Him. I have had many ups and downs this year, but today I got to rest in God’s peace. He has great plans for me (and you!) and my hope is that I get to fulfill them. Like Mary and Joseph did (and the donkey 😅)…..despite the struggles.

Merry Christmas to you all and your families!

Don’t ever forget the reason for this season. We need Jesus now more than ever.
